back from munich! back from a great concert! i’ve seen state radio live.
and what to say, it was every bit exciting as i had hoped for. chetro, chuck and mike pulled of quite an energetic show at a great location: the 59to1 where i have been before for the athlete concert. only this time - even better - it was smoke free (new law in germany)! the setlist included mostly songs from their new album “year of the crow“. trying to get a setlist as i can’t seem to remember the songs of the new album that well. at least i know that they didn’t play “unfortunates” from the new album, which is my favorite. i remember for sure: fall of the american empire, omar bay, wicker plane, cia, guantanamo, gang of thieves, fight no more. and some more. from the other stuff, they played state inspector, black cab motorcade, camilo, mr. larkin (YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!), right me up, waitress, man in the hall, people to people, rushian and even a song from dispatch: time served. so great!
but. no “diner song“. kwentin sad.
what was pretty amazing is that i didn’t expect them to rock that place so hard. i knew it wouldn’t be the same as listening to the CD since i know the Dispatch dvd and other live videos and know that they always like to improvise and change things. it was a blast!
it’s probably the same thing when seeing Monta live - the music is harder than when you hear the tracks on CD.
state radio were supported by “ghost of tom joad” (springsteen and rage against the machine, anyone?) from germany. they were ok as a support, also highly energetic but as richard put it “replaceable”.
so to sum it up:
taken two days off of work: pricy
state radio ticket + shipping: 20 EUR
train klagenfurt-munich: 29 EUR
train munich-klagenfurt: 37 EUR
all you can eat brunch: 19 EUR

music around

a few years ago, a friend of mine gave me the song “the general” by dispatch. i really liked it and listened to it a lot ever since. but i never got myself more than just this one song, until about 2004. i felt bad, because i missed out that long on such a great band. not only is their music awesome and unique, but also very authentic.
it was only to their reunion concerts that i learned about their break-up, which was in 2002. i was curious and finally got myself more albums and loved all about it. then the album with their reunion concert in 2004 got released along with a dvd. dispatch - all points bulletin. two live albums on audio cds and both shows on dvd as well in the package. i’ve never listened to a cd more often than two those two live concerts. they are all perfect*, there are no other words. if you see or only hear this, you will understand. the funniest part is, when they talk about “oh, we’d expect about 20.000 people to show up, but now they had to shut down the roads because we’ve got about a 100.000 strong” - quite a lot for an independent band!
in 2007 they made another round of reunion concerts, benefict concerts for Zimbabwe and various charities the band supports. the full stream was available on their myspace page and a dvd has already been anounced. sure thing i will get it.
but the title of this post is “state radio albums for free”, why do i talk about dispatch? well, after the break-up of dispatch, chad urmson founded state radio, a band that is since then on their way to become another sensation, just like dispatch. “us against the crown” is an overall excellent record and soon they will release their new album “year of the crow“. as good as ordered.
still, the reason i am posting this is that in celebration to the new album, state radio are giving away their previous albums for free! you can download them on their homepage!
three albums are already available (”peace between nations“, “flag of the shiners“, “us against the crown“) and i guess the fourth free album will be the barn sessions. you got about three weeks left to download them until the new album gets out.
and also, there is the song “unfortunates” available as a download, including the story behind this song and further links.
so i’d really like to use this opportunity to say thank you to Dispatch, State Radio and the great guys between this music and the efforts they put in and the ideas for that they stand!
now check out:
* except for a tiny bit on the dvd where the part with the “stir it up” cover during outloud got cut :(
