as you may or may not know, i dropped out of school in 1998 and started an apprenticeship as a software engineer. that means that i never finished my secondary education.
three years ago, when i was doing my alternative civilian service, i started evening school to catch up. this particular evening school is divided in four courses: German, English, Math and either information technology or business studies. each course lasts for about a year and then you have an exam. if i manage to pass all four courses i get my Matura.
stupid enough, i started with math because i thought “what the hell, i’ll start with the hardest one to get it over with”. i did get it over with (but that’s a totally different story :). only by then i lost my motivation to do the other courses. plus, i had a shitload of work to do and with all the trainings outside of Carinthia i had to travel a lot. and i guess you could insert a few other excuses as well. there really are some, but i’ll spare you details.
however, now i thought i just had to finish this and signed up for German and English in the beginning of march. two to three days a week i’ll sit there after work until 10pm. so far it’s quite ok and not as boring as math was, that’s something.
in German, we’re going to read a few books:
- Bernhard Schlink - Der Vorleser
- Friedrich Dürrenmatt - Die Physiker
- Johann Wolfgang Göthe - Faust I
- Lessing - Nathan der Weise
- Franz Kafka - Die Verwandlung
- Anton Schnitzler - Anatol
- Max Frisch - Andorra
- Peter Turrini - Rozznjogd
first task, reading “der vorleser“* from “bernhard schlink”:
so while i’m at home and really should read this and do my homework, i am taking pictures of the book and blog about it.
i’m really off for a good start.
