photowalk.at edition #6 done

leaf in a chain (by KWentin)

yesterday, it was “this time of the month” - our photowalk. we met at the kreuzbergl in klagenfurt and shot around for about two hours, before a little afterwalk drink. this photowalk set a new record for participants with 19 total (and 2 dogs) - a whole lot of people were there for their first time. hope to see you soon at the next photowalk!

at first i was a bit disappointed by the weather and location, but turned out there were some great shots after all - and of course it was great fun.

leaves in the wind. dramatic edition. (by KWentin)
(this one is very dramatic, but i only changed the color temperature and intensity in post-processing)

the flash experience:

my highlight was using a second flash (from werner) that was triggered by my camera off-shoe - i really liked experimenting with two flashes and got some pretty cool results:

stub with flash inside (by KWentin)
here i put the flash inside the stub. with the settings, the whole picture came out this dark and i really like it. - no post processing though it was early afternoon!

the panorama

markus did a great panoramic shot of the whole group, check it out! (quicktime VR)

‘you are watching too many shows.’

(the title is a quote from a friend and i got to hear it after almost every entry i released on tv series. so i had to take this photo.)

well, this was a shitload of tv series i was writing about. and it will not be the last time i wrote about that, i’m just finished with the series i wanted to introduce for now. sure, i could have expanded and also talked about american dad, family guy, simpsons, futurama, malcolm in the middle, scrubs, 24 and so on, but that did not feel right this time. but for sure i will write about the upcoming scrubs and 24 season and whatever comes out.

for now, here is a list of shows i have talked about so far:

i don’t really think these are too many shows, you can easily arrange watching throughout the whole week if you have a tv-recorder. still, it’s a lot to keep track of. that’s why i love www.myepisodes.com.

lost in translation:

also, i’d like to point out the thesis Espy wrote in 2005. topic: The Effects of Dubbing on the Depiction of the United States in American Movies and Television Series in Germany. i asked him and he allowed me to link to the download - pdf with 103 pages. i’ve read his work as a whole and was blown away. there were a lot of arguments about what can go wrong with translating original series for german-speaking audiences - a lot of what i have been telling other people for quite some time. though, if you can live with a translated series, i’m totally ok with it, you just have to consider that you do not see the original work but merely another version, as Espy elaborates in his paper.

what i found most interesting was not the examples of very, very bad translations of futurama jokes (they really did translate a lot quite literally without thinking), but the example movie that he is talking about: Aliens. you might think that in a sci-fi/horror-movie like aliens, where there is not much talking involved, that bad synchronization can’t do that much damage, but you’re totally wrong. and the examples provided are freaking hilarious. hilarious, but also very sad. providing excerpts would be hard, since the examples are in german. yet i know, 99% of my readers are of a german-speaking audience, but still… if you want to, check out the document and just skip the theoretical part right to the comparisons.

there is “proof” that by simply changing the translation you can change a whole character or the whole mood a scene is trying to set up. like when Ripley in Aliens find the little girl Newt:

Ripley: These people are here to protect you. They’re soldiers.
Newt: It won’t make any difference

in the german version, the dialog would be:

Ripley: We all want to protect you. Even/Also the soldiers.
Newt: I don’t care, I don’t want that.

(Ripley: Wir wollen dich doch alle beschützen. Auch die Soldaten.
Newt: Das ist mir egal, ich will es nicht.)

this changes the whole mood of the scene from the creepy child that knows what’s about to happen to a small child rejecting help.
astonishing, yet alarming.

i recommend reading it if you’re interested and the whole point is, that if there’s any chance, stick with the original version - even if you don’t understand every word (heck, sometimes I have a hard time myself) - not only do you learn the language, but chances are good that you end up less confused. like the engineers in the german Apollo 13 version who had to learn how to push a square pig (they translated peg to “Schwein”/pig) through a round hole.

i rest my case.

if you want to share your opinions, feel free to comment on this article or spam Espy directly at alex [at] momoi [dot] de.

barcamp vienna

barcamp vienna is over. time for a little summary.

IMG_6152 (by KWentin)

that was my second barcamp after the one in klagenfurt in february and vienna was a great time as well. as i stated in the introduction round, i don’t have that much to do with all the tech-stuff that happens there, i’m only curious and some sort of spy observer.

a lot of nice people were attending and organisation was perfect! the barcamp vienna took place at the microsoft office and microsoft was also the main sponsor with AON. thanks to the sponsors and the organisation team consisting of Rolf Mistelbacher, Karin Schmollgruber, Thomas Metschke and Michael Schuster.

Oliver Überholz - Web 2.0 in China (by KWentin) one of the most interesting sessions for me was “Web 2.0 in China” by Oliver Überholz. it was really cool to see that China really seems to have it’s own internet, including total rips from all the mayor sites like Google, Flickr or Youtube. and, maybe the funniest thing, they are starting to get confronted with copyright infringements on their own, since they steal from here and there. but that seems to be in their mentality, to just use something that has proven to work well again. i’m glad i attended that session, since i missed it in klagenfurt during another session that got my intention.

important for future barcamps: record every session with a camera and put it online so it won’t be that big of a deal if you miss one session because there was another one at the same time that you attended.

Johannes Beyerlein feat. Sebastian Grünwaldt (by KWentin) martin of course had to do a session on photowalks in austria and i recorded it with georgs video camera. it wasn’t that crowded, but martin has been in talks to export the walks to vorarlberg and vienna already. good thing :)

in the session “get a real life” by Johannes Beyerlein and Sebastian Grünwaldt i mentioned photowalk.at again as part of all the cool things where geeks or people from all over the net meet up in real life (which is a very important thing for me in using the web)

during the very first session i met Ethan Hawk double Christian Lendl from blog.austria.info and he also had his camera with him, doing a few panoramic views and he made the group shot on sunday. turned out really great!

chris was also nice enough to let me play with his sigma 8mm fisheye and i had to make a few shots. fisheyes are great fun. too bad they are a bit pricy if you only need it for “fun”, but chris has already made some great 360° shots, also mixing 360° with cloning people!

here are a few of my fisheye shots:
Martin Grazer (by KWentin) Roman Hanhart / yoda.ch (by KWentin) der ich (by KWentin) IMG_6139 (by KWentin) IMG_6141 (by KWentin) IMG_6147 (by KWentin)
(the second one of roman hanhart has been shot by achim meurer with my cam.)

further links to barcamp vienna:

overall, barcamp was great fun and i’m looking forward to the next one that i will be attending in klagenfurt. planing already started and georg already put up the wiki and the logo!

see you there!

photowalk.at edition #4 done

(photos #1 and #4 by myself. photos #2 and #3 © mgratzer)

more about the photowalk after the jump!

so yesterday was the fourth edition of photowalks in carinthia, coordinated through www.photowalk.at by martin. topic was nightshooting and we met up at Augustin before and then made a few shots. great fun throughout the whole time with some nice people and a great afterparty at Molly Malone’s.

georg also was with us, of course with his video camera. damn it makes me so uncomfortable, i always feel like i’m expected to say something usefull where i have to know what i’m talking about. but that’s hardly ever the case :)

so here are his youtube parts, with lots of kwentin time:

yeah. genesis. i can’t dance. hrhr :D
